I’m not a concept. Too many guys think I’m a concept or I complete them or I’m going to make them alive, but I’m just a fucked up girl who is looking for my own peace of mind. Don’t assign me yours. (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004)
I really dig this quote. It totally supports my belief that no one can make me happy, only I can do that. I am 100% responsible and accountable for my happiness and peace of mind. If a situation is bringing me down, then only I have the power to change it. If I’m not satisfied in a relationship, then I have to re-evaluate and determine if it’s fixable or if it’s time to move on.
Basically, there is no such thing as “you complete me” because I have to be a complete person before anyone worth having will cross my path. And by “complete person” I mean having an inner strength, stable self-esteem, and fairly regular happiness that is not dependent on external factors like the person I’m dating or not dating. Instead I look for someone who will compromise with me, that’s a lot better.
