Tagline: If Nancy doesn’t wake up screaming, she won’t wake up at all.

Let me set the scene: It’s a Saturday in the fall of 1986. My friends from church are having a slumber party. There’s kids ranging from 5 to 15, boys and girls. We’ve had our pizza and snacks. We’ve played games. Now it’s movie time. We’re all scattered around the floor of their living room… some of us have sleeping bags, others blanket pallets. The parents hosting this sleepover are off somewhere else in the house. Their grandma is in her bedroom just off the living room. My friend’s older brother holds up a selection of VHS tapes and gives us the choice of which one to watch first: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET or FRIGHT NIGHT. The former wins the vote. He inserts the tape, turns out the lights, and we all brace ourselves for what’s about to happen onscreen. I’m 8 years old… my dreams and my movie-watching preferences are about to change forever. And their grandma is about to get a roommate (or three) for the night.

Not only did I leave their house the next morning a horror fan for life, but Freddy haunted my dreams for years to come. That is, until another “man” took his place a few years later, after I watched HALLOWEEN for the first time. But that’s a story for another time. Needless to say, slashers are still one of my favorite horror genres and it’s pretty hard to pick just one favorite. So, for this year’s challenge, I went with a sentimental choice because there’s a special place in my nightmares for the first “real” horror movie I ever saw, and I’ll never forget Freddy Krueger.

  1. I was 17 when I first saw it. I was living with my best friend and her family. My friend, her brother and sister and I decided to watch it. It was summer 1986. We watched it. Holy. Hell. Scared the crap out of us. The sister and I had to use the bathroom after it was over, and someone was in the upstairs bathroom so we had to go down to the basement bathroom. Yes, the basement. Needless to say, we heard a noise (of course) and I peed my pants. Yes, I did. The source of the noise. The damn cat. Memories. We both have great memories surrounding this one. 🙂
