Tagline: Fear What’s Inside
Synopsis: “A biologist’s husband disappears. She puts her name forward for an expedition into an environmental disaster zone, but does not find what she’s expecting. The expedition team is made up of the biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, a surveyor, and a linguist.” source
It’s not often we get an all-female group in any genre, but horror and science fiction are especially male dominated. The only other (excellent) horror movie that immediately comes to mind is Marshall’s THE DESCENT. Though, both were directed by men… but I’ll save that rant for another time. 😉
Needless to say, I was pretty stoked about getting to see smart, tough, flawed women — in other words, real women — to the rescue in a science fiction horror film. Of course, what’s inside each woman influences her survival after crossing into the “disaster zone”… and there’s some messed up s^*t happening in The Shimmer!
The most terrifying scene, in terms of traditional horror elements, is definitely the one in which the group takes refuge for the night inside an abandoned house. Amid one member’s paranoia-fueled interrogation of the other group members, something attacks them, and its method of ambushing prey is terrifying with a capital T. I’ve rewatched ANNIHILATION three times and I still have to look away during this scene — it’s so gut-wrenching and brutal.

Excellent choice! Loved this movie. Have yet to read the book, which I hear is also amazing. You are so right about that scene. Bone chilling and gut wrenching. I’ve seen it twice. I need to watch it again.
The Descent is also the bomb. 🙂
