January 2020 Wrap-Up

January is always hectic for me because of client tax deadlines. Top that off with a nice week-long vertigo attack and yeah, I was ready to say “See ya!” to the month as a whole. Still made all my deadlines. Still managed to read 8/10 books I wanted to read.

Total Read: 8

Book of the Month: Dear Girls by Ali Wong

Full disclosure: I love Ali Wong’s comedy style. My first experience with her was Baby Cobra. And I’ve also watched her other Netflix special, Hard Knock Wife, and her rom-com, Always Be My Maybe. LOVED all of ’em.

So I kinda figured her memoir, structured as letters with life lessons for her two daughters, would be my cuppa. I wasn’t wrong. She had me laughing, crying (every time she mentioned her dad), nodding my head, cringing, gagging, crying some more (every time she mentioned her hubby) — an entire gamut of emotions and I loved every minute. This would also be an excellent audiobook to check out… if I were patient enough to listen to one. 🤓

book cover Dear Girls by Ali Wong

Synopsis: “Ali Wong’s heartfelt and hilarious letters to her daughters (the two she put to work while they were still in utero) cover everything they need to know in life, like the unpleasant details of dating, how to be a working mom in a male-dominated profession, and how she trapped their dad.”

Movie of the Month: Freaks (2018)

SOOO good!! Dark like Brightburn, but with the heart of Fast Color. I really loved how you don’t know exactly what’s going on until it’s explicitly revealed. Is the Dad a nutball or is he actually protecting Chloe? Is she seeing the ghost of her mother or simply hallucinating? Is the ice cream truck driver someone Chloe can trust or is he dangerous? Highly recommended!

Synopsis: “A bold girl discovers a bizarre, threatening, and mysterious new world beyond her front door after she escapes her father’s protective and paranoid control.” (source)

Song of the Month: Flora Cash – You’re Somebody Else

Whether you interpret its meaning as being about self-discovery or about someone you’re close to, it’s beautiful 😍
