Look, in my opinion the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what-have-you. The right person is still going to think the sun shines out of your ass. That’s the kind of person that’s worth sticking with. (Juno, 2007)
First off, I love, love, love Juno. It has to be one of the best “feel good” movies I’ve watched in a long time. There’s a lot of dysfunction in Juno’s life and I appreciate that fact. There’s not many of us nowadays who can say we come from a “Leave It To Beaver” upbringing. But despite the difficult situations Juno faces, she always remains true to herself and doesn’t let the obstacles get her down.
I have much respect for anyone and everyone who falls, but gets right back up, dusts themselves off and jumps head first back into life.
Now for my reflections on this quote from the movie, a scene between Juno and her dad, Mac. In case you haven’t seen the movie (if you haven’t–rent it, buy it or borrow it today), Juno’s dad responds with the above quote after Juno asks him if it’s possible for two people to stay together, in love and happy forever.
What I connect with in this quote is the fact that Mac doesn’t sugarcoat his answer, he doesn’t try to shove sunshine and rainbows down Juno’s throat, instead he gives her (what I think) is the best outlook imaginable. Why do I think that? Because finding someone who loves me for me has always been my dream. So many people try to find someone who they can mold or change into their ideal partner. Or worse yet, they try to change themselves to fit that person’s ideals. What a waste of everyone’s time.
Know who you are from the get go–good stuff and flaws–and advertise freely. Don’t hold back. Don’t try to change who you are for anyone, ever. It only delays the inevitable. If it’s not meant to be then no amount of changing will ever please either person.
So, instead, search for that person who wants to kiss you in the morning even though your breath could burn a hole in their nostrils. Find that special someone who shrugs off your bossy tendencies. Seek out the person who will bring out the best in you and you in them. A person who loves you for you, no matter what!
