movie poster The Houses October Built (2014)Ultimately, THE HOUSES OCTOBER BUILT is about getting what you asked for, then quickly realizing that is not what you wanted. It might be fun to push the boundaries, seek out the forbidden, but once you cross certain lines, you can’t go back.

Synopsis: “Beneath the fake blood and cheap masks of countless haunted house attractions across the country, there are whispers of truly terrifying alternatives. Looking to find an authentic, blood-curdling good fright for Halloween, five friends set off on a road trip in an RV to track down these underground Haunts. Just when their search seems to reach a dead end, strange and disturbing things start happening and it becomes clear that the Haunt has come to them…” (source)

Fans of Halloween enjoy being scared. Typically, these macabre devotees visit haunted attractions (aka haunts) in order to get their frights in person, in real time. But after 10, 15, 20 years having the same experience over and over, they have to up the ante, find somewhere more and more intense to feel that old rush. Then they hear about a closely guarded secret haunted house; one so extreme, so elusive, that the only way to find it is to seek out and follow clues during the Halloween season. Who could resist the allure of such an exciting adventure?

THE HOUSES OCTOBER BUILT is jam-packed with creepy scares. Is it flawed? Why sure. What about entertaining, shocking, and frightening? Definitely! I cannot wait to watch this every Halloween. However, if you don’t break out in nervous sweats merely walking up to a new haunt, then you should skip this movie. Only people who are open to and welcome being scared would find a mockumentary about and featuring haunts scary.

Highly recommended if you enjoyed movies like AMBER ALERT or THE STRANGERS.
